How to Affiliate

The Digital Studies Institute offers two ways for U-M Faculty to affiliate themselves with us.

General Faculty Affiliate

DSI Affiliate Faculty members are non-voting Tenured and Tenure-Track Faculty, Lecturers, Postdocs, and Staff who teach or conduct research in the field of Digital Studies, and are not required to provide service to the Institute. Affiliate Faculty members do not have voting rights in the Digital Studies Institute. However, Affiliate Faculty members may be invited to join an ad hoc committee if they have specific expertise that would be valuable. Affiliate Faculty members will be added to the DSI Affiliate Faculty listserv and will receive communications related to the DSI Lecture Series, DSI community events, research talks, and more. Affiliate Faculty members will also be invited to attend and participate in the DSI Research Colloquium Series, which is designed to give DSI Faculty and Graduate Students the opportunity to present and receive feedback on their research in the early (or not so early) stages. Affiliate Faculty members are welcome to apply for Governing Faculty status at any time.

Governing Faculty

DSI Governing Faculty are voting Tenured and Tenure-Track Faculty and Lecturers with courtesy (0% effort or line-weight) appointments in the Institute. Governing faculty consists of appointments extended at the discretion of the DSI Executive Committee. Governing Faculty have voting rights on issues related to hiring, curriculum, and governance in the Digital Studies Institute appropriate to their seniority or rank. Governing Faculty are expected to attend monthly DSI Faculty Meetings, as well as a yearly DSI Faculty Retreat, and may be given service assignments on committees in consultation with the faculty member's home unit to ensure a transparent and reasonable workload. Administrative Leadership will come from the Governing Faculty member ranks.
